2015 Nissan Sentra vs. 2015 Hyundai Elantra

A quick view of the compact sedan class reveals something that might not be evident from the segment’s name: these cars really aren’t all that compact. At the very least, they aren’t as compact as they used to be. In fact, many cars that round out the segment--including the 2015 Nissan Sentra and 2015 Hyundai Elantra--would have been considered mid-size just a decade ago. So, in comparing these two great vehicles, it’s best to focus on the “sedan” portion rather than the “compact” label. Both feature spacious interior cabins, generous trunk storage and ample legroom for up to five adult occupants.

However, these two vehicles aren’t alike as it might initially seem, particularly in their disparate powertrains: the Sentra features an Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), while the Elantra offers a standard six-speed automatic transmission. Now, you’re asking, “What is wrong with an automatic transmission?” And the answer is, nothing, really. It’s a matter of preference, and what is offered in the Xtronic CVT is this: seamless transition between gears, more accurate shifting ratios and a higher fuel economy. This noteworthy feature, in addition to the Sentra’s inexpensive sticker price and larger interior cabin, is much of the reason that it maintains a sizeable lead over its Hyundai competitor.
